Sign, Witness & Notarize: Make Your Documents Legally Binding After Completing Them Online
What do I do when I am done creating my Will or Trust on the website?
After completing your documents, the next step is to ensure their legal validity by signing and, where required, getting them notarized. The specific requirements can vary by document and state, but here’s a general guideline to follow:
1. Review the First Page of Each Document: Each document includes specific instructions on the first page outlining the signing requirements for your state. It's essential to start here.
2. Understand the Signature Requirements:
- For HIPAA documents, only your signature is needed.
- For other key documents, typical requirements include your signature, two witnesses, and a notary public’s seal. Keep in mind that the need for witnesses and a notary can differ by state; for example, Wills may be optional in some states but are highly recommended to have notarized.
3. Safekeeping: Finally, store your documents in a secure location. Make sure your loved ones know where to find them when needed. There’s no requirement to file your Will with any court or government agency, nor do you need to return it to us after it has been signed and notarized.
